ANACHRONISTIC & NEW ROMANTIC PRODUCTIONS

The creation of Shien Lee, Dances of Vice is a New York nightlife sensation which incorporates a myriad of anachronistic and New Romantic influences in Dadaistic celebration of the liberating effects of beauty, fantasy and surrealism.

Photoset: Deco Japan & The Heart of the Modern Girl

We had an incredible sold out night at Japan Society last weekend for Deco Japan & The Heart of the Modern Girl. Thank you to all the individuals that helped make it such a success, and thank you to all the revellers that came and showed their appreciation for Japanese culture and art deco!

Deco Japan & the Heart of the Modern Girl

Dances of Vice and the Japan Society present an evening with the modern girl, or Moga, and her kaleidoscopic world of dancing, drinking, and late night revelry. Learn a new step on the dancefloor, sip an intoxicating tonic and take in the sultry sounds of live pre-War jazz by the Kuni Mikami Jazz Quintet featuring vocalist Mari Koga.

Also, watch as fashionable flirtation comes to life as real Mogas wearing deco era style fashion designed by Mutsumi Gee of Allure Original Styles shimmy through the halls of Japan Society’s exhibition Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Cutlure 1920-1945. Period attire is strongly encouraged!

Dances of Vice calls all dangerous women, fugitive lovers, dashing desperadoes, lonely detectives and ne’er-do-wells are to the sequel to last year’s crime noir soiree “The Diamond Ace”, a 1960s themed salute to classic film noir at Public Assembly executed in grand pulp style.

Sponsored in part by New York crime fiction publisher Hard Case Crime, “The Diamond Ace II” promises a night of mystery, passion, suspense and seduction with live crime jazz and film noir music by Morricone Youth.

New York femme fatales Bettina May, Ruby Valentine and Tansy Tandora weave tales of violence and temptation before your eyes, and DJs Michael Leviton and Devon E. Levins provide a killer soundtrack for your dancing pleasure until the early hours.

May 14th: Dances of Vice Spring Ball

On May 14th, 2011, Dances of Vice presents a mini festival at the historic Morningside Castle (100 Claremont Ave) to celebrate the glory of spring in Dances of Vice: The Secret Garden Spring Masquerade, a dinner theater and spring masquerade ball.

Enjoy a dinner fit for royalty under the Gothic arches and stained glass windows of the stunning refectory hall of the castle to the dulcet sounds of live harpsichord and opera, or enjoy a series of Victorian lawn games in the castle courtyard, followed by a complete Dances of Vice Jazz Age ball.

If you’ve been missing the Dances of Vice Festival, the Spring Masquerade is what you’ve been waiting for. The program will incorporate music, fashion and entertainment from the various historical eras we’ve celebrated since our inception in 2007, as well as a gallery of fine arts vendors.

Details are forthcoming - in the meantime, save the date!
