Photoset: Deco Japan & The Heart of the Modern Girl

We had an incredible sold out night at Japan Society last weekend for Deco Japan & The Heart of the Modern Girl. Thank you to all the individuals that helped make it such a success, and thank you to all the revellers that came and showed their appreciation for Japanese culture and art deco!

Deco Japan & the Heart of the Modern Girl

Dances of Vice and the Japan Society present an evening with the modern girl, or Moga, and her kaleidoscopic world of dancing, drinking, and late night revelry. Learn a new step on the dancefloor, sip an intoxicating tonic and take in the sultry sounds of live pre-War jazz by the Kuni Mikami Jazz Quintet featuring vocalist Mari Koga.

Also, watch as fashionable flirtation comes to life as real Mogas wearing deco era style fashion designed by Mutsumi Gee of Allure Original Styles shimmy through the halls of Japan Society’s exhibition Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Cutlure 1920-1945. Period attire is strongly encouraged!

The Diamond Ace in Review

Dances of Vice: The Diamond Ace was a film noir lover's paradise: Pistol-wielding femme fatales weaving tales of violence and temptation, crimes of passion enacted on the dance floor, sultry crime jazz full of suspense and seduction.. It was, truly, a night to remember, and a fantastic debut at Liberty Hall at The Ace Hotel, where Dances of Vice will continue to be held monthly.

It had been over 2 years since Dances of Vice charged just $10 admission at the door, and a long time since an event had fallen on a Saturday night in Manhattan - the response was overwhelming. There was a crowded line of gorgeous femmes and brutes wrapped all the way around the Broadway, and unfortunately many were turned away as the venue hit capacity at 11PM.

The lucky ones who reserved their tickets in advance or got in before the event sold out witnessed a thrilling and violent tango duel between Sergio Segura and Matt Grubler of the Strictly Tango Dance Company, who were fighting over the attentions of burlesque sensation Medianoche. As John Milton put it, jealousy is the injured lover's hell, and the dancers captured its essence in an incredibly display.

Medianoche is without a doubt one of my favorite burlesque performers in New York, and she has outdone herself with her latest number to Harlem Nocturne, snapped above by Gabi Porter of Metromix. Burlesque goddess Veronica Varlow (below) is a vision on her own, and if looks could kill, she would surely be New York's most wanted murderess.

The cabaret program ended with a final set by Gato Loco, who provided the perfect musical backdrop for the evening with electrifying crime jazz and tango. DJs PUREVILE and Miz Margo took over for the late night set of Disko Nouveaux, serving a double dose of dark glam and new wave for the new romantics that danced until the lights came on at 4AM.

I can't wait for the next event at Liberty Hall, "Powerhouse Stomp" on February 19th, which will be a tribute to classic cartoons of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, complete with a full jazz orchestra and Betty Boop pinup contest! Details are forthcoming, so stay tuned.
